98-year-old former President Jimmy Carter enters a hospice

February 19, 2023 – Former President Jimmy Carter will forgo further hospital treatment and receive hospice care at his home in Georgia, the Carter Center in Atlanta announced.

“After a series of brief hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care in lieu of further medical intervention,” The statement says“He has the full support of his family and medical team. The Carter family requests privacy during this time and is grateful for the outpouring of support from his many admirers.”

The Carter Center didn’t provide any information in regards to the background to the choice, however the 98-year-old former president has struggled with various health problems over the past decade.

In 2015, Carter was treated for liver cancer and melanoma that had spread to his brain. The Carter Center saidCarter thought he had only weeks to live, but doctors at Winship Cancer Center developed a treatment plan that included stereotactic radiation to regulate the metastatic tumors in his brain and a latest systemic immunotherapy drug.

In 2019, Carter fell several times. In one fall, he suffered a cut that required 14 stitches, and in one other fall, he suffered a broken pelvis. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reportedIn late 2019, he underwent surgery to alleviate pressure on his brain attributable to a subdural hematoma related to one among the falls. The Carter Center said.

Carter, 98, recovered from his health problems and worked on Habitat for Humanity projects, but he has made fewer public appearances in recent times and didn’t attend President Joe Biden's inauguration in January 2021.

Carter served from 1977 to 1981 and is the oldest former US president. After his presidency, Carter devoted himself to promoting human rights, working with Habitat for Humanity and fighting Guinea worm disease in Africa. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
