Standing vs. Sitting: Fewer Pounds, Less Heart Disease?

The research we're taking a look at.

Standing burns barely more calories than sitting – about 0.15 calories per minute. But that small difference adds up: A one that weighs 143 kilos can burn an additional 54 calories a day by standing as an alternative of sitting for six hours, as researchers report within the January 1, 2018, European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Assuming the person continues to eat the identical variety of calories per day, that translates to a 5.5-pound weight reduction after one 12 months. The estimate comes from data pooled from 46 different studies.

A separate study of greater than 2,600 people age 60 and older checked out how sedentary behavior affects heart disease risk. Participants reported how long they sat at the beginning of the study (one weekday and one weekend) and again two years later. Follow-up lasted a median of only nine years. The researchers found that older adults who sat for a median of lower than three hours a day were 33 percent less more likely to die from heart disease than those that sat for a median of seven hours a day. The study was published in March 2018. American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
