January 26, 2023 – The federal government has rejected three residents’ petitions for guidance on using CBD in food and food supplements. CBD can also be referred to as cannabidiol and is a non-psychoactive compound derived from cannabis.
The FDA announced on Thursday that it should work with Congress to develop a recent regulatory framework to make sure protected use. The current safety standards for dietary supplements and additives should not applicable to cannabidiol, the FDA said.
“We have not found sufficient evidence to determine how much CBD can be consumed and for how long before it causes harm,” said FDA Deputy Commissioner Janet Woodcock in a opinion.
“The use of CBD raises several safety concerns, especially with long-term use,” Woodcock said. “Studies have shown the potential for liver damage, interactions with certain medications, and possible damage to the male reproductive system.”
“A new regulatory pathway would benefit consumers by providing protection and control to manage and minimize the risks associated with CBD products.”
The FDA has generally not done much to implement regulations regarding CBD. Reuters Instead, the organization focused on foods and beverages whose health effects are unproven.
The FDA also said CBD products may not meet safety standards for substances in pet food and is not going to issue recent regulations allowing their use in pet food.
“A new regulatory approach to CBD is needed that balances individuals’ desire for access to CBD products with the regulatory oversight needed to manage the risks,” the agency said.
In some states, the consumption of cannabis products is legal, but on the federal level they're illegal.
