June 28, 2023 – It is common knowledge that drinking an excessive amount of alcohol is bad in your health, but the concept that slightly alcohol might be healthy persists.
However, recent research shows that moderate alcohol consumption offers no protection against type 2 diabetes, obesity and other endocrine diseases.
The research results were published within the journal Endocrine Society. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
“The researchers said their results showed no benefits of alcohol consumption – even light to moderate consumption – on endocrine diseases,” Medical news today reported.
“Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with numerous negative health outcomes, which we confirmed in this study,” said Tianyuan Lu, the study's lead writer and an epidemiologist at McGill University in Montreal. “However, there has long been a debate about whether light alcohol consumption has a protective effect. Our study found that light alcohol consumption does not protect against obesity or type 2 diabetes.”
The researchers examined data from greater than 400,000 people participating within the UK Biobank project. They concluded that folks who drink greater than 14 alcoholic drinks per week have the next risk of obesity and kind 2 diabetes. They found no evidence of improved health outcomes in individuals who drank seven or fewer alcoholic drinks per week.
The National Institutes of Health According to the standards, “heavy alcohol consumption” is defined as greater than two alcohol consumptions per day for men and a couple of alcohol consumption per day for ladies.
“All the evidence suggests that there is actually no safe amount of alcohol,” said Dr. David Cutler of Providence Saint John's Health Center in California, who was not involved within the study.
