According to research presented on the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in November 2019, individuals with heart disease even have a better risk of developing cancer.
Researchers analyzed data from the Framingham Heart Study on 12,712 individuals who didn't have heart disease or cancer in the beginning of the study. They used a risk estimator that predicts an individual's likelihood of developing heart disease inside 10 years.
Over a 15-year period, the researchers found that individuals with a 10-year risk estimate rating of 20 percent or higher were thrice more prone to develop cancer than those with a 10-year rating of 5 percent or less. , resembling the prostate, lungs, or gastrointestinal tract. Also, individuals who later had a heart attack, heart failure, or atrial fibrillation were more prone to develop cancer than individuals who had no heart problems.
Although this was an observational study, the researchers noted that heart disease and cancer share many risk aspects, resembling poor nutrition, lack of exercise and smoking. If you've gotten a high risk of heart disease, it's best to also concentrate on the potential risk of cancer, he added.
