May 23, 2023 – COVID-19 booster shots usually are not linked to increased risk of miscarriage, latest study finds JAMA network opened.
The researchers wanted to search out out whether a booster vaccination in early pregnancy before the twentieth week was related to the next risk of miscarriage.
They examined greater than 100,000 pregnancies aged 6 to 19 weeks from eight health systems within the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). They found that a COVID-19 booster vaccination during a 28- or 42-day exposure window didn’t increase the likelihood of miscarriage.
“These results support the safety of COVID-19 booster vaccination in early pregnancy,” they wrote.
The VSD is a collaboration between CDC's Immunization Safety Office and huge health systems. The “observational, case-control, and surveillance study” was conducted from November 1, 2021, to June 12, 2022.
“COVID infection during pregnancy increases the risk of a poor outcome, yet many people who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant are hesitant to receive a booster dose for safety reasons,” said Dr. Elyse Kharbanda, senior researcher on the HealthPartners Institute and lead writer of the study in a Press release.
The University of Minnesota reported: “Previous studies have shown that initial vaccination against COVID-19 during pregnancy is safe and is not associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. Several studies have also shown that COVID-19 may be more severe during pregnancy and lead to worse outcomes for the mother.”
